Thanksgiving Favorites Recipes: Creamy Mashed Potatoes

Thanksgiving table set with mashed potatoes, squash, and Thanksgiving meal plate.

No Thanksgiving table would be complete without the mashed potatoes!

Where would you put the gravy?

But if everything else the busy cook is doing, do they really need to worry about complicated mashed potato recipes with sour cream, spices, or other complex combinations?

This tip will give you creamy mashed potatoes every time, simply and easily.

Everyone knows the Thanksgiving favorites recipe for mashed potatoes, right?

Boiled Potatoes, butter, milk, salt.

The key to creamy mashed potatoes is the milk. Always use whole milk with your mashed potatoes, never 2% or skim. Half-and-half works well, too, if you have it on hand.

The other key to keeping those potatoes creamy is the ratio. For the creamiest potatoes, follow this rule of thumb. For 6 medium potatoes, use 3 tablespoons of butter, 3 tablespoons of milk, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Drizzle in a little more milk if potatoes are dry and won’t mash, a teaspoon at a time. Then mash, and finish by stirring with enthusiasm to bring out the creamy texture.

Happy Thanksgiving!
